YSI 2940 and 2980 multi-channel online monitors
Looking for a solution for automated, near real-time monitoring of multiple bioreactors in parallel? YSI 2940 and 2980 from YSI, a Xylem brand, are multi-channel online monitors that connect up to eight vessels to a YSI 2900 analyser, giving you automated sampling and analysis for several bioprocesses at once. We know lab, and we are here to help you integrate the system into your lab or production environment.
The system is designed for parallel bioreactor setups and delivers aseptic sampling, analyte-specific results in around 60 seconds per analyte and web-based remote monitoring. It interfaces with virtually any bioreactor type or size, including single-use vessels.
Key features
- Automated, aseptic sampling from up to 8 vessels
- Measurement of up to 6 analytes
- Analyte-specific results in around 60 seconds per analyte
- Simultaneous online monitoring and 96-well plate sampling
- Touchscreen with icon-driven HMI
- Automated cleaning cycle
- Autoclavable components, CIP and SIP compatible
- Connectivity with SCADA, DAS, LIMS and feed control systems
- Remote access and control via a web-based server
- OPC server option for full integration
- 21 CFR Part 11 compliant software
Two models for different needs
YSI 2940 and 2980 are two models on the same platform, adapted to the number of bioreactors you need to monitor at the same time.
- YSI 2940 is the 4-channel monitor that connects to up to 4 vessels.
- YSI 2980 is the 8-channel monitor that connects to up to 8 vessels.
Both models pair with a YSI 2900 analyser for the actual measurement. Sampling uses disposable tubing assemblies and pre-sterilised tubing sets, keeping the fluid path clean and minimising the risk of contamination.
How the system works
YSI 2940 and 2980 are designed as fluid and data management devices that draw samples from bioreactors, fermenters or other process streams and deliver them to a YSI 2900 analyser for measurement. Sampling can be cell-free or cell-containing, depending on the application, and the system can deliver samples up to three metres away.
The software is web-based and pre-installed on the system’s internal processor. This means you can control, configure and monitor the system from any computer using a web browser and an assigned IP address. The software is 21 CFR Part 11 compliant and can be integrated with other software systems.
Connectivity and integration
Connectivity options include:
- Analog output 0–5 V (up to two analytes per vessel)
- Serial communication
- TCP/IP or OPC for data transfer
- OPC server software option (YSI 2925)
The OPC option enables integration with any OPC-enabled system, including SCADA systems, bioprocess management systems and data historians. The internal web server allows multiple bioreactors or entire development labs to be accessed centrally.
Feed control and process optimisation
The multi-channel monitors are not limited to passive monitoring; they can also be used for active process control. Feed control can be implemented through:
- Integration with your bioreactor controller
- Integration with a SCADA-based feed control system
- Data sharing to external feed systems via OPC
This opens up closed-loop control of nutrient feed based on real-time measurements of glucose, glutamine or other analytes.
Typical applications
- Parallel cell culture experiments and scale-up studies
- Fermentation and biofuel production
- Cell therapy
- Bioprocess research and development
- Process optimisation and Design of Experiments (DoE)
- Continuous processing
- CGMP manufacturing and regulated environments
Service, validation and documentation
YSI 2940 and 2980 are 21 CFR Part 11 compliant and support regulatory requirements for electronic records. Berner Lab provides installation, installation testing and user training delivered by certified service technicians. For regulated environments, installation qualification (IQ) and operational qualification (OQ) are also available. Validation and ongoing qualification are handled according to your own process.
Frequently asked questions about YSI 2940 and 2980
How many bioreactors can YSI 2940 and 2980 monitor?
YSI 2940 monitors up to 4 bioreactors in parallel, and YSI 2980 monitors up to 8 bioreactors. Each vessel can be analysed for up to 6 analytes.
How quickly do I get results?
The system delivers analyte-specific results in around 60 seconds per analyte and vessel. Sampling frequency can be adjusted to suit your process.
Which analytes can be measured?
The system pairs with a YSI 2900 analyser and can measure up to 6 analytes in parallel, including glucose, lactate, glutamine, glutamate, ammonium, potassium, glycerol, ethanol, methanol, sucrose, galactose, lactose, choline, xylose and hydrogen peroxide.
Does the system work with single-use vessels?
Yes. The multi-channel monitors are designed to interface with virtually any bioreactor type or size, including single-use vessels and both cell-free and cell-containing sampling.
Can I control the system remotely?
Yes. The built-in web server lets you monitor, configure and control the system from any computer on the same network via a web browser and an assigned IP address.
What is the difference between YSI 2900M and YSI 2940 or 2980?
