How the technology works

YSI’s biosensor technology is built on immobilised enzyme electrodes. The enzyme reacts specifically with the target analyte to produce hydrogen peroxide, which in turn reacts with a platinum electrode. The current generated is proportional to the analyte concentration. The technology has been in use since 1975 and is based on several patented solutions.

The design offers a number of benefits:

  • Selectivity: Finds the target analyte even in complex sample matrices, which eliminates sample preparation.
  • Specificity: Reacts only with the target analyte, which minimises interference and improves accuracy.
  • Sensitivity: Responds to low concentrations and requires small sample volumes (10 to 50 µL).
  • Speed: Analysis time of around 60 seconds per sample.
  • Cost-effective operation: Enzymes are not consumed during analysis, and the need for sample preparation is minimal.

  • Whole blood or serum glucose: CV under 2 per cent at 75 mg/dL, NIST serum controls 965A CV 0.5 to 1.1 per cent for 34 to 292 mg/dL.

Service and maintenance

YSI 2500 is designed for minimal internal maintenance. The operator replaces membranes and checks calibrations on a regular basis. External maintenance is carried out by a certified service technician, typically after around 1,000 hours of operation, or every six to twelve months depending on usage. Berner Lab offers service agreements with annual maintenance visits including a PM kit.

Installation and training

On delivery, installation, installation testing and user training are handled by qualified and certified service technicians. For regulated environments, installation qualification (IQ) and operational qualification (OQ) are also available.

Frequently asked questions about YSI 2500

What is the difference between YSI 2500 and YSI 2900?

YSI 2500 is the cost-effective alternative for glucose and lactate analysis only. YSI 2900 supports a broader analyte panel with up to 15 analytes, including glutamine, glutamate, ammonium, potassium, ethanol, methanol and more.

How quickly do I get results?

YSI 2500 delivers analyte-specific results in around 60 seconds per analysis, thanks to YSI’s proprietary immobilised enzyme-electrode technology.

Which sample types can be analysed?

The instrument handles samples from 96-well plates, microcentrifuge tubes, as well as stat and syringe samples. The sample volume is user-defined from 10 to 50 µL.

What precision and linearity does YSI 2500 offer?

Precision is typically CV under 2 per cent at calibration point, and linearity is ±5 per cent of the calibration value up to maximum.

What does maintenance involve?

Internal maintenance is mainly membrane replacement and calibration checks. External service is typically recommended every six to twelve months, depending on usage.

Can YSI 2500 be upgraded to support more analytes?

No. YSI 2500 is purpose-built for glucose and lactate. If you need additional analytes, YSI 2900 or YSI 2950 are recommended, both of which are modular and expandable to up to six analytes in parallel.
