YSI 2900M Online Monitor & Control System

YSI 2900M Online Monitor & Control System

YSI 2900M Online Monitor & Control System delivers automated, aseptic monitoring of one bioreactor with up to six analytes and results in around 60 seconds. 21 CFR Part 11 and GAMP 5 compliant.

Looking for a solution for automated, near real-time bioreactor monitoring? The YSI 2900M Online Monitor & Control System from YSI, a Xylem brand, combines the YSI 2900 biochemistry analyser with the YSI 2960 online sampler, giving you an automated path from bioreactor to ready analyte result. We know lab, and we are here to help you integrate the system with your specific setup.

YSI 2900M is designed for single-vessel monitoring and suits cell culture, fermentation and process optimisation alike. Sampling is performed aseptically directly from the bioreactor, and analyte-specific results are delivered in around 60 seconds thanks to YSI’s proprietary immobilised enzyme-electrode technology.

How the system works

The YSI 2900M consists of the YSI 2900 biochemistry analyser combined with the YSI 2960 online sampler. The sampler draws a sample directly from the bioreactor or another process stream and delivers it to the analyser for measurement. Typical sample volume is around 1.5 mL, which is sufficient to purge the sample cup and deliver a fresh sample.

Between samples, the end of the sampling line is filled with an antiseptic solution. This preserves sterility and minimises the risk of contamination, allowing the system to operate unattended for days or weeks, provided sufficient reagent supply is in place.

Measurement ranges

YSI 2900M covers a broad set of analytes with defined measurement ranges:

  • Glucose: 0.05 to 25 g/L
  • Lactate: 0.05 to 2.70 g/L
  • Glutamate: 15 to 1,460 mg/L
  • Glutamine: 30 to 1,169 mg/L
  • Glycerol: 0.75 to 40 g/L
  • Xylose: 0.5 to 30 g/L
  • Choline: 5 to 450 mg/L
  • Hydrogen peroxide: 3 to 300 mg/L
  • Sucrose: 0.1 to 25 g/L
  • Ethanol: 0.04 to 3.2 g/L
  • Ethanol HC: 0.5 to 40 g/L
  • Methanol: 0.1 to 2.5 g/L
  • Lactose: 0.05 to 25 g/L
  • Galactose: 0.1 to 25 g/L

Connectivity and integration

The system is open for integration with existing bioreactor systems and process platforms. Connectivity options include:

  • RS232 serial communication
  • Analog output 0–5 V or 0–10 V
  • Ethernet
  • OPC, via the 2920 OPC Data Manager add-on module

With OPC connectivity you also get access to an internal web server and can reach the system from any browser on your network. This simplifies remote monitoring and data sharing across multiple labs or suites.

Feed control and process optimisation

YSI 2900M can be used for active process control, not just passive monitoring. Feed control can be implemented in several ways:

  • Setpoint control via the 2900M’s built-in PID loop
  • Integration with your bioreactor controller
  • Integration with a SCADA-based feed control system

This lets you regulate the supply of glucose or other nutrients automatically based on real-time measurements.

Typical applications

  • Cell culture and cell therapy
  • Fermentation and biofuel production
  • Bioprocess research and development
  • Process optimisation and Design of Experiments (DoE)
  • Continuous processing
  • CGMP manufacturing and regulated environments

Service, validation and documentation

YSI 2900M is 21 CFR Part 11 compliant and supports GAMP 5. Berner Lab provides installation, installation testing and user training delivered by certified service technicians. For regulated environments, installation qualification (IQ) and operational qualification (OQ) are also available. Validation and ongoing qualification are handled according to your own process.

Frequently asked questions about YSI 2900M Online Monitor & Control System

How many bioreactors can YSI 2900M monitor?

YSI 2900M is a single-vessel system that monitors one bioreactor at a time, with up to six parallel analytes. If you need to monitor several bioreactors in parallel, YSI 2940 or YSI 2980 multi-channel online monitors are better suited.

How quickly do I get results?

The system delivers analyte-specific results in around 60 seconds per analyte. Sampling intervals can be set as needed, and the system can operate unattended around the clock.

Can the system connect to my SCADA or LIMS?

Yes. YSI 2900M supports RS232, analog 0–5 V, Ethernet and OPC via the 2920 OPC Data Manager add-on module.

Is YSI 2900M compatible with single-use vessels?

Yes. The system is designed to interface with virtually any bioreactor type or size, including single-use systems.

What is the difference between YSI 2900M and the benchtop YSI 2900?

Read more about YSI 2900 benchtop analyser. YSI 2900M combines the same analyser with an automated online sampler for continuous, aseptic monitoring directly from the bioreactor.
